Ways To Make A Difference In The Lives Of Senior Citizens

August 21, 2020

National Senior Citizens Day is right around the corner. Friday, Aug. 21, is National Senior Citizens Day and there’s so many ways to make the day a special one. When we’re younger, we tend to forget that we’ll one day be senior citizens, so we sometimes forget about the needs of the senior citizens in our lives. If you have a senior citizen in your life, whether it’s a parent, grandparent, friend, or a co-worker, National Senior Citizens Day is an excellent time to show them just how important they are.

National Senior Citizens Day

Even if you don’t have a senior citizen close to you, you can still make a difference on National Senior Citizens Day. It may be a good time to visit a retirement home, nursing home, or an assisted living complex to make some new friends! Many senior citizens don’t have children, nieces, or nephews to visit them and many of their friends or older family members may not be around to visit them. National Senior Citizens Day is the perfect time to start a relationship with a senior who may be looking for some company.

Being a senior citizen is a positive thing, and it’s important that senior citizens are honored and respected, especially on National Senior Citizens Day. Many businesses will offer special discounts or deals to senior citizens on Aug. 21.

Ways To Make A Difference On Aug. 21

If you’re interested in giving back on Aug. 21, we have some ideas for you to choose from. Whether you will be sharing the day with a parent, grandparent, relative, friend, or stranger, you will be sure to make a positive impact in someone’s life!

  • Create a family history project. Put together a family tree, a scrapbook, or photo album.

  • Play board games, read books, or watch movies together.

  • Teach a senior citizen how to use a computer and the internet. Encourage them to learn how to Skype so they can interact with family and friends more often.

  • Visit a favorite family restaurant.

  • Cook a meal and enjoy it with the senior citizen in your life.

  • Bake cookies or cupcakes and deliver them to senior citizens in your community.

  • Visit a retirement home with books, movies, and magazines to share with the residents.

  • Do yard work for a senior citizen in your life, or even a neighbor down the road.

  • Help to clean out your friend’s garage. Help them get rid of their unwanted car.

  • Conduct an interview with the senior citizens in your life to learn more about their memories.

  • Do arts and crafts or work in the garden together.

  • Teach a senior citizen gentle yoga and meditation, which is great for the mind and body.

  • Join a book club together.

If you have other ideas for ways to make National Senior Citizens Day special, we’d love to hear them! Share them on our Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ pages.

Help By Donating A Car

Something that makes nearly everyone feel good is giving back to the community. If the senior citizen in your life has an unwanted car that they no longer want or need, maybe they’d be interested in donating it to a good cause. Whether the car is old or new and running or not, Wheels For Wishes will pick up or tow away donated vehicles and the earned proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish. Donated cars help to grant wishes for children between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 who are battling critical illnesses.

Help to make a difference in the life of others by donating a car to charity. Donate an unwanted vehicle by calling 1-855-278-9474 or fill out our online car donation form. Donate your car before 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31 and receive a great tax deduction for the same tax year. Donate a car today and help to make a difference in the lives of others.
